Embracing History Magazine Freelance Writers Guidelines
Embracing History welcomes your article submissions with photos. Unless other
arrangements are made, all submissions are subject to editing before publication.
What we look for:
Previously unpublished articles of historical interest. These include accounts of historical events
and places, legends and folklore, artifacts and antiques, preservation, restoration, travel to historic
places (including museums, towns, and areas), and educational/historical fact-based "how to" articles (i.e., photography hints, arranging trips to areas, and the like.) Let your imagination be your guide, although we suggest a query to us if your subject matter is questionable. Please be able to back up any facts with footnotes, if needed.
We will also consider historical fiction and book excerpts on a case by case basis.
All submissions should be between 1200 to 3000 words. DO NOT FORMAT TEXT.
Photographs or illustrations are preferred with all submissions, the more the better. DO NOT EMBED IMAGES.
Specifics:
Text should be in Microsoft Word or MS Word Compatible Document. Photos preferred as JPG, PDF, or TIFF.
E-mail submissions as attachments or snail-mail a CD or Flash drive.
Last name in upper corner of each page; word count on title page.
Do not send us your only copy. Keep a back up!
Self addressed stamped envelope if return of materials is desired.
DO NOT FORMAT YOUR DOCUMENT. We will handle the layout and formatting.
We like to see Numbered References/Footnotes (where you got your information, i.e., book, website, family bible, family legend) to any and all stories. If you have them please use them! These stories will be considered first.
Payment:
3 Complementary copies
Business Card or Classified Ad in the issue your article is published.
Miscellaneous:
Completed manuscripts with a brief cover letter are considered.
E-mail or snail mail query letters with submission idea if desired.
List references and/or sources if applicable.
Include brief (30 words or less) author bio.
Photo Guidelines:
Original photos by the author or used with permission.
Send full resolution original copies of Digital Images 4 megapixels and up
High resolution scanned photos may be emailed 300dpi minimum
Color or B&W prints Color preferred
Only sharp focus with good contrast pictures are used
35mm slow speed film or digital (300dpi or higher). No Polaroid's!
Make the subject the main focus of the photo -- fill the frame.
DO NOT EMBED IMAGES IN YOUR DOCUMENT.
Send caption information including names of persons in pictures, locations, etc.
